I can’t ride a bike. That is the evil truth.
I have received a lot of flak over this the last couple of years. And today I was presented with the awful metaphor that never mastering this developmental step has had a direct correlation to other areas of my life where I am insecure or lacking. Do I believe this? Maybe.
But not enough to get on a bike. At least not right now. Despite my utter hatred of the phrase ‘baby steps’ I think that is where I am at…. Due to my bike aversion, the one class I have always stayed away from at the gym is SPIN. Even though it is one of the classes they have the most often- especially on the weekend. So this weekend, I am going to take a Spin Class. That is my goal. And I am communicating it to you. I have really slacked going to the gym, choosing the outdoor track by my house instead (or lets face it choosing to stare at the walls instead) and hopefully this will bring new inspiration.
Somehow I have the feeling that this will also result in a fairly humiliating story that I can then share with all my WGWaFA fans. Or to cheer up those disappointed people who found this site while surfing for porn. Since this post has been a little lacking in my usual wit and charm, I am also presenting you with a special offer!

Day number 5 of my 7 day detox! I am sleeping better and there has been a noticeable upward spike in my energy level. I would also kick a puppy for a chocolate chip cookie. Also, to the surprise of many, fruit is growing on me. All but the dreaded banana which will forever remain off the list.
Yesterday we were given free lunch at a Grammar Refresher writing class at work (if you read my blog regularly you know how badly I need this)and it took everything I had to load up on salad forgoing the sandwiches and pasta. The girl sitting behind me is eating Mrs. Field’s cookies and kindly offered me one. I declined. And as I type this Frank, a guy at our work who I would need an entirely new blog to describe, just rolled around a cart full of food. Literally. Catering fall-out that he offers around before he leaves. My heart beats faster wondering what is on that cart? And will that food get thrown away? So I don’t even look.
When I think of summer I think of BBQ’s, eating fried clams the beach, Sangria& Margarita roof parties, picnics while watching movies in Bryant park. As I reach the end of my detox, I wonder how I am going to balance my health and fun this summer. That is a puzzle I’ve always been unable to solve because somewhere along the way food and fun got dangerously intermingled. But here is one thing I have never even thought of in terms of summer:
Summertime: Say goodbye to school lunches
This is the subject of the following message from America’s Second Harvest:
More than 18 million school children rely on free or reduced-price meals during the school year. But in summer, less than 2 million kids access meals through the federal Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) due to lack of awareness and a shortage of sites in many areas. In June, America’s Second Harvest kicks off a “Summer Food Celebration” to educate the public about SFSPsites in their communities. As part of the Celebration, we are also working with member food banks to increase the number of summer food sites available.
There has been so much food around me this week. Free for the taking. But would I have helped anyone by running after Frank to see what kind of goodies he has on his cart? Now through June 30th due to a matching grant every donation you make to America’s Second Harvest counts double. That means every $1 donated provides 32 meals instead of 16.
CLICK HERE to donate to Bare Ass 2008! All proceeds go to America’s Second Harvest and funds programs like the Summer Food Celebration and Kids Cafe the most expansive child-feeding initiative in the country with more than 1,700 locations.
If I make through the 7 days, a good friend has pledged to donate $10 to Bare Ass 2008! That will equal 320 meals donated. If you would like to make a similar pledge you can email me at wgwafa@gmail.com or feel free to comment.
