{June 28, 2008}   Took a Spin Class

OW!!

I can’t ride a bike.  That is the evil truth.

I have received a lot of flak over this the last couple of years.  And today I was presented with the awful metaphor that never mastering this developmental step has had a direct correlation to other areas of my life where I am insecure or lacking.  Do I believe this?  Maybe.

But not enough to get on a bike.  At least not right now.  Despite my utter hatred of the phrase ‘baby steps’  I think that is where I am at….  Due to my bike aversion, the one class I have always stayed away from at the gym is SPIN.  Even though it is one of the classes they have the most often- especially on the weekend.  So this weekend, I am going to take a Spin Class.  That is my goal.  And I am communicating it to you.  I have really slacked going to the gym, choosing the outdoor track by my house instead (or lets face it choosing to stare at the walls instead) and hopefully this will bring new inspiration.

Somehow I have the feeling that this will also result in a fairly humiliating story that I can then share with all my WGWaFA fans. Or to cheer up those disappointed people who found this site while surfing for porn.  Since this post has been a little lacking in my usual wit and charm, I am also presenting you with a special offer!

The Hunger Site is having a Summer Clearance Sale  Your shopping on the site funds food for the hungry. And until June 27th if you enter “iwillwait” in the promotion code box at final checkout you will receive $10 off an order of $50 or more.  Global Girlfriend is my fav place for fun clothes and accessories.  Check it out.

{June 21, 2008}   Where’s my Dark Knight?

Happy first day of summer.  My 7 day detox is now complete.  After a week of eating mainly fruits (still on the fence about them) veggies, lean protein sources like egg whites and fat free Greek yogurt and forgoing all alcohol, caffeine, sugar, meat – I have to say I feel wicked awesome.

It was also really hard to get through the week without breaking so I know that living in this super strict state all the time would not work for me.  Eventually it would lead to binge eating.  But for now, my food cravings have considerably declined and I was really able to lessen my portion size.  Which is my goal for this week.  Limit portions, eating smaller healthier meals throughout the day and to step up my exercise.  Because in my Category Cloud the Workout category is still the smallest.

In the grand tradition of comparing my new weight  to something that weighs the same.  In honor of all my new *Second Life friends, at 177lbs I now weigh the same as a Final Fantasy character.

Name: Cecil Harvey
Class: Dark Knight
Age: 20
Height: 6′
Weight: 177 lbs
Equipment: Dark Swords, Shields, Gauntlets, Armor, Helmets
Skill(s): DarkCecil Harvey is a loyal Dark Knight, and Captain of the Red Wings of Baron. He works for the King, and idolized him as a child. However, when he looks upon the needless destruction he had to cause in Mysidia, he questions his loyalty to the King. He questions the King about his actions, and gets banished from the Red Wings. Cecil Harvey has an intricate past and is great friends withKain, his Dragoon friend who also works for the King of Baron. He is also in love with Rosa, though he does not reveal his feelings.

Now I would usually pontificate on the reasons that I am better than my similarly massed conterpart.  But come on, Cecil is a Dark Knight.  How frakking cool is that?  Even if he appears emotionally unavailable.  Stay strong Rosa, your Dark Knight will come.

Completing my full week detox, a friend has given me her promised $10 to donate to Bare Ass 2008!  With America’s Second Harvest receiving a matching grant that doubles your gift until June 30th, that $10 equals 320 meals for those in need.  Thank you to everyone who donated to Bare Ass 2008!  this week, all donations are anonymous (unless you send me an ecard to wgwafa@gmail.com to let me know it was you!) and go directly through Network for Good via my charity badge  to America’s Second Harvest.

CLICK HERE  to donate to Bare Ass 2008! before June 30th and help America’s Second Harvest reach their goal of providing 7 million meals to families facing hunger.

*if I accidentally offended Second Life folks with the reference to final fantasy please comment below.  I am still ignorant in the SL way of life.

Day number 5 of my 7 day detox!  I am sleeping better and there has been a noticeable upward spike in my energy level.  I would also kick a puppy for a chocolate chip cookie.  Also, to the surprise of many, fruit is growing on me. All but the dreaded banana which will forever remain off the list.

Yesterday we were given free lunch at a Grammar Refresher writing class at work (if you read my blog regularly you know how badly I need this)and it took everything I had to load up on salad forgoing the sandwiches and pasta.  The girl sitting behind me is eating Mrs. Field’s cookies and kindly offered me one. I declined. And as I type this Frank, a guy at our work who I would need an entirely new blog to describe, just rolled around a cart full of food.  Literally.  Catering fall-out that he offers around before he leaves.  My heart beats faster wondering what is on that cart? And will that food get thrown away? So I don’t even look.

When I think of summer I think of BBQ’s, eating fried clams the beach, Sangria& Margarita roof parties, picnics while watching movies in Bryant park.  As I reach the end of my detox, I wonder how I am going to balance my health and fun this summer.  That is a puzzle I’ve always been unable to solve because somewhere along the way food and fun got dangerously intermingled.  But here is one thing I have never even thought of in terms of summer:

Summertime: Say goodbye to school lunches

This is the subject of the following message from America’s Second Harvest:

More than 18 million school children rely on free or reduced-price meals during the school year. But in summer, less than 2 million kids access meals through the federal Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) due to lack of awareness and a shortage of sites in many areas. In June, America’s Second Harvest kicks off a “Summer Food Celebration” to educate the public about SFSPsites in their communities. As part of the Celebration, we are also working with member food banks to increase the number of summer food sites available.

There has been so much food around me this week.  Free for the taking.  But would I have helped anyone by running after Frank to see what kind of goodies he has on his cart?  Now through June 30th due to a matching grant every donation you make to America’s Second Harvest counts double.  That means every $1 donated provides 32 meals instead of 16.

CLICK HERE  to donate to Bare Ass 2008! All proceeds go to America’s Second Harvest and funds programs like the Summer Food Celebration and Kids Cafe the most expansive child-feeding initiative in the country with more than 1,700 locations.

If I make through the 7 days, a good friend has pledged to donate $10 to Bare Ass 2008!  That  will equal 320 meals donated.  If you would like to make a similar pledge you can email me at wgwafa@gmail.com or feel free to comment.
